Chic openings and reopenings in Costa Rica

For years, luxury in Costa Rica’s northwestern reaches was defined by the Four Seasons at Peninsula Papagayo (fourseasons.com; from $1,175), which opened in 2004 on an extraordinary jungle isthmus bracketed between twin white-sand beaches. After a several-month closure and a staggering $35m spend, the resort will reopen next week with a commendably sleek and chic new look: all white-on-cream walls and textiles, light woods and rattan, with judicious hits of chrome and steel to place it firmly in the now.

Next up: Nayara Springs Tented Resort (nayarasprings.com; prices yet to be set), a safari-inspired sister property to the secluded Nayara Springs retreat and spa on the fringes of the Arenal Volcano Natural Park.
