The best of Berlin

Boutiques, markets and specialist stores for everything from chic stationery to one-of-a-kind jewellery

Andreas Murkudis' Store 81 is located in the former printworks of the Tagesspiegel newspaper on Potsdamer Straße. Andreas Murkudis, an amazing store in a warehouse in an industrial area of Berlin. It sells everything from furniture to toys, all created by small-scale local designers, and much of it is very good. Potsdamer Strasse 81E, 10785 (+4930-6807 98306; andreasmurkudis.com).

Berlin is the only place that I think rivals London in terms of culture and creativity – but it’s also great for a classic department store experience. For me, it has to be KaDeWe, where the Chocolate Bar is an absolute treat. I recommend the pralines and truffles. Tauentzienstrasse 21-24, 10789 (+4930-21 210; kadewe.de).

The Mitte district is super-compact, and I like it for shopping because alongside the retail offering, it has everything you need, from history and culture to great food. the stationery store RSVP to buy pens: it has a huge amount of unusual stock from Japan. I also like the farmers’ market at Zionskirchplatz, where I go to buy dark rye bread and seeded loaves, and The Barn Roastery – it’s really convivial, and the coffee is really good. The Barn Roastery, Schönhauser Allee 8, 10119 (thebarn.de). RSVP, Mulackstrasse 14 + 26, 10119 (+4930-3195 6410; rsvp-berlin.de).
